When 17th-century astronomers first-year turned their telescopes to Jupiter, they noted a conspicuous reddened spot on the giant planet. Closer follow-up by NASAs Hubble Space Telescope reveals that these spots are very a rare alignment of three of Jupiters largest moons - Io, Ganymede, and Callisto - across the planets face. In this image, the telltale signatures of this alignment are the shadows [the three black circles] variety by the moons.
